Prof Riana Bornman
An innovator in the field of men’s health
Riana grew up in Hertzogville, a farming community in the Free State. The memories of vast open plains and immense endless skies remain indelibly implanted in her psyche. From her early days she remembers having an insatiable curiosity which naturally led her into the world of medical science and research.

After completing her medical degree and 5 years in General Surgery in Boitumelo Hospital, Kroonstad she possibly was the first female with a keen interest in General Urology in South Africa. She then dedicated herself to Andrology and has spent altogether 34 years in Andrology and Male Reproductive Health at the University of Pretoria.
She is currently contracted as Senior Research Fellow in the School of Health Systems and Public Health (SHSPH) at the University of Pretoria.
Riana published 127 papers and presented at international conferences on the ageing male, endocrine disrupters and human and environmental health effects of DDT exposure.
Together with Prof. Dion Du Plessis, she established the first Clinic for Erectile Dysfunction in South Africa.
Prof Eberhard Nieschlag from the University of Munster in Germany taught her about the intricacies of male infertility and later about how to treat the ageing male.
